Critical Lens of to Kill a Mocking Bird, and a Raisin in the Sun

It was Robert G. Ingersoll who once said; â€Å"The most prominent trial by fire on earth is to shoulder rout without losing heart. † at the end of the day, he is attempting to pass on to us that throughout everyday life, it is the manner by which we manage our disappointments, and not the moves we make during our high focuses that issue most. This is on the grounds that what our identity is and how we act during our lows are what characterize us as individuals. As per this statement, two models in which this thought happens continually are Lorraine Hansberry’s dubious play, A Raisin in the Sun, and Harper Lee’s eminent novel, To Kill a Mockingbird.Let’s dig into these bits of writing to push Ingersoll’s theory into light. A Raisin in the Sun depicts half a month in the life of the Youngers, an African-American family living on the South Side of Chicago in the1950s. The Youngers experience a daily reality such that partiality and racial obliviousnes s have a hold on the majority, making their life troublesome. After the demise of Mrs. Younger’s (or Mama) dearest spouse, a protection check at last comes to them for around 10,000 dollars.Confident that his arrangement of opening an alcohol store will comprehend the Younger’s budgetary issues hitherto, Walter Younger willingly volunteered to put the vast majority of his cash into opening his store with two of his partners. In a horrendous new development, one of his accomplices took off with the entirety of the cash Walter contributed, leaving him with nothing. After this cataclysmic mix-up, Walter feels at an unequaled low. With enticement originating from Mr. Linder to surrender their fantasy about moving into a changeless house for a pay off, Walter nearly moves and submits, yet ultimately, he has an epiphany. He understands that his family’s pride and respect can't be purchased, and he dismissed Mr. Linder’s pay off, and the Youngers made the intense move into Clybourne Park, an all-white neighborhood, with their heads held high, and looking decidedly into what's to come. Walter’s spouse, Ruth gets a huge pass up a sudden pregnancy. In the Younger’s current circumstance, Ruth having a child would be totally impeding to their previously disintegrating money related situation. Her resolve was tried by the path of least resistance when she was enticed to go to a premature birth center. As this chance and the entirety of the pressure from the pregnancy was developing on Ruth’s effectively disturbed psyche, she felt lost. After Walter got some answers concerning the pregnancy (And Ruth’s arranging of a fetus removal), he turned out to be annoyed with his better half, saying that a premature birth was not the appropriate response, and he accepted that regardless of whether tenderizing another life into a pained circumstance would be troublesome, he said that it was a test worth taking on.Walter’s val iance when confronting Mr. Linder enlivened Ruth to take her hardship head on and make the best choice as opposed to taking an annihilation with a vanquished respect. To Kill a Mockingbird rotates around Scout Finch, who livesâ with her sibling, Jem, and their bereft dad, Atticus, in the tired Alabama town of Maycomb. Close to the start of the story, Atticus is doled out a practically outlandish case, in the barrier of a dark man (Tom Robinson) blamed for assaulting and battering a white lady (Mayella Ewell).Unlike most every other person around, Atticus can look past the shade of Tom’s skin and really observe Tom’s honesty and fairness. Taking a striking position for the situation, he battles with each bit of his being to bring into light Tom’s honesty and the blemishes of the indictment, who’s whole contention depended on incidental proof and racial points of interest (white versus dark in a racially partial milieu). In spite of the fact that Atticus m ade a fantastic barrier, the jury despite everything discovered Tom guilty.Atticus was totally squashed, yet he regardless held his head high and demonstrated idealism whenever he revealed to Tom they despite everything got another opportunity. To show gratefulness for all of Atticus’ exertion and pride for the situation, the African American gallery had an overwhelming applause for Atticus to respect his activity very much done, and this shows an ideal case of an annihilation demonstrating a trial by fire. On the opposite finish of this range, we have Tom Robinson, who was really the focal point of this court case.Just attempting to offer agreeable help to a lady out of luck, tom much of the time offered a serving to Mayella Ewell, who originates from an extremely heartbreaking family circumstance, monetarily and misuse savvy. In the long run, Mayella began to look all starry eyed at Tom, and afterward sought after him, however Tom being a nice hitched man dismissed. In an a brupt curve, this situation transformed into Tom assaulting Mayella and the whole network turning on him. After a thorough preliminary, the jury, as we probably am aware, seen Tom as blameworthy. In this annihilation, Tom endeavored to get away from the officials and make a run for it.His resolve was broken by his thrashing, and he wound up paying his life for it. Maybe in the event that he had sat tight for the subsequent preliminary, he may have been discovered honest. As demonstrated over and over in these two works and numerous others, â€Å"The most prominent trial by fire on earth is to manage rout without losing heart. † All careful history this announcement has been demonstrated to be valid. We should consistently recollect that it is the means by which we present ourselves during our most exceedingly terrible occasions, and this is the thing that characterizes us.

Doris Lessings The Golden Notebook was published in 1962. Over the next several years,  feminism  again became a significant movement in the United States, the United Kingdom, and much of the world. The Golden Notebook was seen by many feminists of the 1960s as an influential work that revealed the experience of women in society. Notebooks of a Womans Life The Golden Notebook tells the story of Anna Wulf and her four notebooks of different colors that narrate aspects of her life. The notebook of the title is a fifth, gold-colored notebook in which Annas sanity is questioned as she weaves together the other four notebooks. Annas dreams and diary entries appear throughout the novel. Postmodern Structure The Golden Notebook has autobiographical layers: the character Anna reflects elements of author Doris Lessings own life, while Anna writes an autobiographical novel about her imagined Ella, who writes autobiographical stories. The structure of The Golden Notebook also intertwines the political conflicts and emotional conflicts in the characters lives. Feminism and feminist theory often rejected traditional form and structure in art and literature. The Feminist Art Movement considered rigid form to be a representation of patriarchal society, a male-dominated hierarchy. Feminism and postmodernism often overlap; both theoretical viewpoints can be seen in analysis of The Golden Notebook. A Consciousness-Raising Novel Feminists also responded to the consciousness-raising aspect of The Golden Notebook. Each of Annas four notebooks reflects a different area of her life, and her experiences lead to a larger statement about flawed society as a whole. The idea behind consciousness-raising is that the personal experiences of women should not be separated from the political movement of feminism. In fact, the personal experiences of women reflect the political state of society. Hearing Womens Voices The Golden Notebook was both groundbreaking and controversial. It dealt with womens sexuality and questioned assumptions about their relationships with men. Doris Lessing has often stated that the thoughts expressed in The Golden Notebook should not have come as a surprise to anyone. Women had obviously been saying these things, she said, but had anyone been listening? Is The Golden Notebook a Feminist Novel? Although The Golden Notebook is often hailed by feminists as an important consciousness-raising novel, Doris Lessing has notably downplayed a feminist interpretation of her work. While she may not have set out to write a political novel, her work does illustrate ideas that were relevant to the feminist movement, particularly in the sense that the personal is political. Several years after The Golden Notebook was published, Doris Lessing said that she was a feminist because women were second-class citizens. Her rejection of a feminist reading of The Golden Notebook is not the same as rejecting feminism. She also expressed surprise that while women had long been saying these things, it made all the difference in the world that someone wrote them down. The Golden Notebook was listed as one of the hundred best novels in English by Time magazine. Doris Lessing was awarded the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature.

Effects Of Short Term Cognitive Training On Episodic...

The Effects of Short Term Cognitive Training on Episodic Memory and Executive Functioning in Healthy Seniors As humans begin to get older, there is a strong association between age change and the decline of cognition. This a concern that many individuals have as they start to get older, especially with the media coverage that Alzheimer’s disease has been getting. There are many causes of this decline, and it often varies highly between individuals based on their lifestyle and physical activity level (Brown AK, Liu-Ambrose T, Tate R, Lord SR, 2009). Degenerate diseases such as Alzheimer’s can also be a major cause of cognitive decline and are common in elderly populations. There are many who are looking to improve or maintain their cognitive abilities or those of a loved one, as there is an expectation that even in old age, one should be as physically and mentally fit as they can be. The human brain is very adaptive and has the capability to improve functioning even if i t has been impaired (Vas, A. K., Spence, J., Chapman, S. B. ,2015). I am looking to see if cognitive training can improve these basic brain functions in the elderly. This study will look to find a way to decrease the consequences of cognitive decline that is either premature or more severe than the natural decline of mental capacity. These benefits could also apply to the prevention of cognitive decline in younger individuals. Dementia Is Not A Disease But Rather A Group Of Symptoms...

Dementia is not a disease but rather a group of symptoms caused by disorders that affect the brain (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, n. d). The hallmark of dementia, memory impairment, is accompanied by deficits in language, motor function, recognition, or executive function (Stahl, 2013). The most common forms of dementia are caused by Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal lobar degeneration (Prince et al., 2013). The risk of dementia increases with age. Dementia is rare below the age of sixty but affects about 17% of those between 80 and 85 years of age, 33% of those between 85 and 90 years old, and 50% of those over 90 years of age (Tom et al., 2015). Treatment Plan Decision One In decision point one, the choices provided are to initiate (a) rivastigmine 1.5 mg orally twice daily with an increase to 3 mg orally twice daily in two weeks, (b) donepezil 5 mg orally at bedtime, or (c) galantamine 4 mg orally twice daily. All of the medications are cholinesterase inhibitors and are considered first-line pharmacotherapy for AD (Yiannopoulou Papageorgiou, 2012). In randomized controlled trials, rivastigmine, donepezil, and galantamine showed no significant difference in efficacy (Yiannopoulou Papageorgiou, 2012). Donepezil was selected. Once-daily dosing has been shown to have better adherence than twice daily (Ryan et al., 2014). Galantamine and rivastigmine have a higher incidence of gastrointestinal adverse effects than donepezil (Noetzli Eap, 2013; Yiannopoulou Papageorgiou, 2012). The medication, donepezil, was chosen to reduce the client’s behavioral symptoms and slow the progression of neurodegeneration. The client returned to the clinic in four weeks accompanied by his son. Self Managed Learning free essay sample

Self-managed learning (SML) is a concept, which has had a lot of speculation and has a variety of different interpretations. A broad definition of SML is a process in which individuals manage their own learning and are responsible for controlling how, when, what, why, and where they learn. SML refers to ‘self-generated thoughts, feelings and behaviors’ that are oriented to attaining goals’ (Zimmerman, 2000). (1). It’s about setting goals for learning by understanding the purpose of what you want to achieve. At the beginning of the 20th century phycology has become more of a science and the interest of how individuals differ on their educational functioning has increased. Huge growth in information technology and the increased global knowledge has increased the importance of learning on society. People need to be constantly moving forward and improving their abilities in order to keep up. It is possible to learn from almost all situations, not just in the classroom. You can learn from social situations, from the media, from within their job or even whilst on the bus. The benefits are clear and if you have the drive to learn yourself, you can do so and improve yourself dramatically. Self-managed learning is an approach to management development, which enables managers to be aware of how they achieve key results using everyday work issues. They are able to control the pace of their learning style to best suit them individually and control the content. In the workplace however it is uncommon for the managers to give individuals complete responsibility for their learning. They are more likely however to give them a choice from several given options to meet their individual preferences. From my own experience when I’ve been given choice over what and how I learn I feel my opion in more valued and am more motivated to produce quality work. Some other firms don’t take a SML approach and it is often the case that when given the opportunity to mange your own learning, you are less motivated to do so. Such as students when handing in assignments, often leave it to the last minute. It is heavily dependent on your individual preferences, and no one is identical in the way that they learn. Lifelong learning is the voluntary self-motivated pursuit of knowledge either for personal or professional reasons. It is not always used to improve a person’s employability or competitiveness yet can also be used for personal development and self-sustainability. It does not have to be approached from within the workplace. Individuals can improve their personal development by attending Study Circles for example. This is a method of Study first practiced in Sweden and involves a group of people meeting up to have good old-fashioned conversation and to educate themselves in an informal setting. This can be used in the professional situations as well by putting groups of employees together to discuss important issues, using group knowledge to identify and overcome problems. It can also prove good to obtain critical feedback. The Japanese model of ‘Kaizen’, meaning continuous improvement is a good way of reflecting how constantly learning and improving yourself can bring benefits within organisations. Employees who can self manage themselves to learn new ways in which they perform their job can reduce wastages, increase efficiencies, productivities and motivation. Through giving employees the responsibility to improve themselves they will feel more valued and motivated and they may also learn new ideas that may not have been known about before hand. LO 2 From looking at my personal skills audit attached, I have identified key skills in which I need to improve to become more employable. I have set a goal to become more employable, to obtain a placement and eventually become a manager. I can see what position I am in and where my weaknesses are from my Skills audit (See Appendix A) to uncover areas for development to achieve my goal. I believe I am a great team player and work well in group activities. My teamworking People are the fundamental building block of any organisation, which makes being able to work well with many types of people a major attribute for me to have for future careers. However I’ve noticed a lack in communicational skills and time-management skills on my behalf. I have therefore chosen these as areas for my development. In today’s era job security has fallen. People are less likely to be employed by the same firm for the rest of their life and therefore I feel the need to create a personal development plan has increased. Creating a personal development plan will help me reflect upon my personal career goals and can organise my thoughts, making them easier to process. From understanding what I like and dislike in the workplace I can create clearly defined steps on how to achieve what I want. Discussions with others such as my supervisor at work can help me understand what I’m good at and what I should be doing in the future. Once my goals have been identified action plans can be implemented. Examples of action steps in a personal development plan could be; Update CV, Enroll at University, Attend Conferences etc†¦ These steps can be devised to personally suit me and can help me achieve my goals of becoming a The short-range goals for me are to constantly improve my skills in all relevant areas in order to meet the new demand for flexible workers that can move between job descriptions. I am unlikely to be in the same job for the rest of my life and therefore there is a need for me to be able to cope with change and have a varied set of strong skills. I have identified that I need to improve my communicational skills in the preparation for future careers. Most companies require the professional standard of speaking English language in their employees. Whilst I have this key communicational skill I feel the need to improve my oral communicational skills in presentations and for interviews and meetings. By improving my communicational skills it will bring with it new skills. To improve this in the future and to make me more employable in the financial sector I have set a development plan. Practice speaking in front of groups of people I am comfortable with. Attend Study Circles Research into cultural diversity Learn appropriate terminology for the business world The Professional Development Plan is a tool that can help me focus, evaluate, and prioritize my professional development activities. The Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE) defines a Professional Development Plan as a planned program for faculty and staff acquisition of knowledge and development skills (ABHE Guide, 2005, p. 67). (1). This would include description of my professional aspirations, goals, interests and activities. And sometimes a history of previously completed professional development activities. This will then be used to create a timeline for future development. By being more conscientious of my communicational skills I am able to constantly seek ways in which I can improve it. By setting a clear goal of improving my oral communication I can practice it in my everyday life, not just in professional situations. Practice of communicational skills in front of people I feel confortable with can give me increased confidence and can improve presentational skills and communication in other professional situations. By being more aware of the differences of audiences, dependent on their age, culture and gender for example, I can tailor my communication to best suit them, and can be taken more seriously. Attending classes and conferences for example can help me learn new styles of communication. Asking friends for feedback on how I can improve my communication can provide me with critical feedback that I can use to make adjustments and improve myself. Resources needed for achieving this would be finding information and details of classes on the Internet. Study Circles as I stated earlier are a great way for me to improve my knowledge and communication. It can teach me a widespread of views from different opinions. This is important when in the workplace as they are increasing in cultural diversity and an understanding of how views can vary is essential. I need to learn how to take other peoples opinions into account and listen to their ideas to better myself. Especially in my desired position as a manger is this going to be important, as feedback from employees are going to need to be evaluated for example. Researching into cultural diversity is something that I can do at times that are usually wasted. I can be sat on the bus whilst reading reports on other cultures business norms and values. This can give me an increased awareness, broadening my mind and improving my knowledge; all beneficial for future careers. Through reading articles in my spare time I can learn appropriate terminology and language techniques that can help my communication become more professional. It will help conversation flow amongst professionals and myself in the future. The benefits of using my Professional Development Plan will help me find ways to further enhance the skills I’ve already acquired as well as helping to achieve my achieve my goals. It will serve as a tool for me to evaluate my educational activities and will make clearer what I need to do for my improvement. From my personal skills audit I have decided that my time management skills are at a good standard, however there is always room for improvement. I hope to improve time management qualities such as punctuality, deadline meetings and to avoid procrastination when completing tasks. The tasks to which I have assigned myself are to; Schedule and report all activities and tasks Make use of ‘Wasted time’ Deadline setting From effective scheduling I can improve my time management skills. I will be able to understand how much work I can get done in a day and can set appropriate targets as a result. Scheduling my social life as well as my work life can help me to get used to managing my time and being disciplined, which will be a great attribute to bring to my future careers. Making use of my wasted time is a great way to gain new knowledge and can get myself used to learning and not wasting valuable time. For example, instead of browsing on social media sites, I could read relevant articles and publications giving me knowledge of the business world I hope to enter. When working on assignments’ I will set appropriate rest periods. Planning an hour of work followed by 20 minutes of rest has been said to be beneficial for learning. If I do not appropriately set myself break periods from my learning I can have an overload of information and may not learn as much. When planning tasks that need to be completed I believe setting time periods on when they need to be completed is a technique I need to use to help me in the future. Not doing this can create a To-Do List that seems never ending whereas having time deadlines for each task can reduce this burden. Employers in the future are going to be looking for individuals who posses time management skills so their required tasks can be completed quickly and efficiently, decreasing time spent on tasks and saving them money. The final key skill I have identified for me to focus my learning upon is my team working skills. LO – 3 After gathering all the resources I started to implement the development plan onto my life. First, on the way to work I read business related articles on the internet via my mobile phone. This helped improve my knowledge and I felt cleverer on the subject than I was before. This has been something I have repeated in many situations whereby my time would have before been wasted. Such as when I was in the waiting room at the doctors, I read another similar article. When writing tasks down in my schedule, they seemed to build up and build up causing there to be an overload of tasks I had to complete. I feel that I documented them wrong and should have included time periods for my tasks to be completed, as well as the details for the task. By doing this I believe that I can get used to trying to finish tasks for a deadline rather than just understanding what needs to be done. This can help spread my workload and reduce stress. I can take this to my workplace, as when tasks get given to me I will be better trained at completing them on time. I have also learnt that some tasks were more difficult than others were and required more attention. I will therefore include into my development plan the complexity of the task, so that I can prioritise my time and not leave little time for a complex task. When looking back at the effect of my development plan I realise that there needed to be some revisions. I also realise that they require a lot more dedication than what I first put in. I needed to understand how each task was helping me improve in order to maximize the level of learning. To better my development plan I ensured I had the resources to complete the development plan, such as a scheduling book and from taking books from the library containing useful information. LO 4 Communication between management and staff is the cause of a variety of workplace issues. If management is not open to listening or implementing solutions that would make life easier or more efficient for workers, it can be perceived as cold-hearted or uncaring, and lose the respect of the employees. If, on the other hand, workers do not give a manager an honest chance to lead the team and refuse to follow suggestions, the manager may become resentful and angry. In a workplace setting, it is vital that everyone feels that they have an arena to be safely and fairly heard. Management can go a long way to preventing communication breakdowns by setting team meetings and insisting on a respectful atmosphere for all involved.

Competitors in this type of business primarily sell raspados or sno-cones and do not focus on the shave ice market. One major competitor is the Snow Shack located on State Street. Snow Shack sells sno-cones through a small, one person trailer with limited choices of syrups. Other competitors sell sno-cones through Garcias Market and the Wal-Mart store which also have limited syrup selections and do not necessarily focus on the sno-cone or shave ice industry as their primary product. Om Mani Padme Hum free essay sample

Om mani padme hum. I sip my sweetened, roasted, yerba mate from my cuia(gourd) with a customary bomba (filtering straw) and write an email to a friend in Portanol, a blend of Portuguese and Spanish that, while a bad idea to use in the real world, is fun for socializing. Om mani padme hum. I count my Tibetan prayer beads through my hands, one at a time with my right thumb, stopping to utter a special prayer of compassion and self guidance at each of the three small beads. Om mani padme hum. The kettle starts to whimper, so I steep my green tea and sit down with two beverages now from opposite sides of the world and pull up Facebook. Thats a pretty typical evening for me. Before I do my homework, before I eat dinner, I socialize a little, and unwind as its good for the soul. We will write a custom essay sample on Om Mani Padme Hum or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I am a professed tea drinker. Beyond that, I cant really say I am committed to any one religion. I am a Buddhist, Thelemite, Christian, Taoist, Pagan, Hindu, Occultist practitioner of Shamanism, supporter of Islam, and lover of the Universe. How does that make a tea drinker? Tea is what inspired it all. It started when I found a green tea I liked. I did some research and found out I was drinking a Japanese sencha. Its a surprisingly natural and simple flavor to come from a country where the hustling, bustling Tokyo stands as a focal point. I then jumped the sea and tried some oolong, a smoky, black tea that Chinese medicine prescribes for the winter just as it prescribes green tea for the summer. Sipping oolong, it wasnt very hard to see the Tao in the snow falling under the Illinois moon, in the steam rising from the mug of amber liquid, in my own misting breath. From oolong I went to darjeelings and assams, Indian grown black teas each with a unique flavor. In India I experimented with chai, a sweet, creamy, spiced sensation reminiscent of the Hindu religion. Dancing Shiva, smiling Ganesha, even the exacting Kali are brewed in the universe under Brahma, so too is chai made with thousands of flavors and ingredients, varied by region, all united in one drink, one word, the tea of t he polytheistic monotheist. India brought me to London where I found many a delightful blend of black and flavored teas, including that beloved classic: Earl Gray. Now I was here for a while until I picked up some red tea, really an herbal infusion of the rooibos plant, and found myself in Africa, where indigenous societies and Shamans still practice in a beautiful and primal environment. I could taste the dancing around a fire, the chanting and then I was in Australia and North America as well, cold earth under my. White tea was the only flavor that had eluded me, but eventually the delicate nature of the tea became clear to me. Like the taste of a gentle crown, the flavor of meditation under a bodhi tree, and a tonic with such an effect in its subtlety, similar to the beauty of the Saviors faith, rediscovered in the garden of Gethsamane as sacred blood poured from his pores from the profound nature of his prayers. Tea, black, green, white, red, or herbal started my heart and as it filled my belly and my mouth so too did it plant a seed in me. With every sip of my connection to the sacred, I know I will be met with only more success and I will never stop influencing those around me with tea bags and quotes from canon, to create a culture of universal contentment.

Saturation Essay Essays

Saturation Essay Essays Saturation Essay Essay Saturation Essay Essay Viola students are all aware of the infamous Professor Taller Old Testament worksheets, and I have just begun mine. That night, the La Miranda weather was cool and a relief from the smoldering hot temperatures of the day time. As I began to work on my assignment, I occasionally glanced around me. The sky was pitch black with glistening stars that looked like fireflies. Groups of people walked by, school books In one hand and Bibles In the other. As I continued to drift off into my own thoughts, I suddenly noticed a boy and a girl sitting next to the fountain with their feet up against the barrier of the pool of water. I was intrigued by their in-depth conversation of faith, life, and heartache. At the end of their conversation, the boy prayed for the girl and they parted ways. I sat in my chair In awe of how amazing my fellow peers were. Every twenty minutes of doing work I would take a break and relax. I could smell the scents of my sweet freshly baked cookie and coffee from Commons. I picked up my cookie and CLC could feel the soft dough and chocolate in my hands. I took short sips of my coffee to ensure that it lasted me the duration of my time studying. The creamy and sweet caramel overjoyed my mouth. I sat there thinking about how blessed and lucky I was, hat the beautiful scenery and essences of Bola were now my home. I once again took out my folder and began working. While continuing my work, I decided to turn on soothing music and immediately Goggled Hellions united. As I listened to the songs, I could hear in the background the trickling of the fountain as each stream of water came down. The coolness of the oncoming breeze slightly touched the back of my neck. The trees and leaves looked as if they were dancing ballet together to a beautiful song. Everything about the scene was serene. As I took In a deep breath, I felt a sense of composure. Although my worksheets were stressful, I felt as though I had the motivation and relaxation to finish them on time. Being part of such an academically inclined community made it feel as though I was trying to swim against a deep current, but in this exact moment I felt a sense of calmness in all the chaos. As I looked up and saw the elaborate mural of Jesus on the wall, It reminded me of how Jesus told Peter to walk on the water and trust Him. Peter stepped out to Tallow Jesus, out Degas to Tell tartar Decease AT ten walls wince made him begin to sink. I believe our everyday life is the same in the sense that once e take our eyes off Jesus and begin to worry, we also begin to sink. Although I had been feeling overwhelmed, I realized that I was brought to this university for a purpose. I needed to have more faith and trust in not only Gods plan for me, but in myself and my abilities as well. I have always been a person to stress myself over things out of my control. Whether it be school work, activities, or life in general. When I decided to attend Viola, I knew I would encounter many trials. Although these trials may feel endless, when I am sitting at the Fountain 0 of Faith my strength feels renewed. I feel as if I am David and all of my hardships are Goliath, and with God I can defeat any obstacle in my way. When I am sitting here relaxing, those feelings begin to fade. When I was deciding which school was right for me, my mom told me to visit each campus and sit somewhere where I could really get a feel of what the community was like. When I visited Viola, the place I chose was the exact table I sit at every time I come here to study. I love to be able to sit and remember my experience of why I chose this university in the first place. Each study session reminds me of how much I love Viola and everyone in it. As I push myself to my limit, I feel a sense of relief as I finish my last page of my last worksheet. The fountain shuts off, which tells me that it is midnight. It is pure silence besides the faint noise of clicking from keyboards on laptops in the distance. I sigh as a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders and I just sit. I sit and think of the opportunities God has provided me with. I sit and think of everything that has lead up to this moment. I sit and think of Gods goodness. After I pack up my things to head back to my dorm, I take a moment to pull up a chair next to the fountain. I notice the cerulean blue tiles that line four of the seven steps. The other three are painted white with detailed yellow flowers. I put my feet up Just as the couple had done earlier and I look up. My eyes wander into the Jet black sky full of numerous stars. As I notice the bright moon, I realize that God created everything in the sky. He names each star by name, and cares for me so much more than each star that drapes the Heavens. As I sit in awe of Gods creation, I cannot help but notice all of the glory and power of The Lord. Sometimes all you need in lifes chaotic trials, is to be still and know that He is God.

This era's three presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Essay

This era's three presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson, presided over a federal government beginning to assert its power to regulate - Essay Example In 1902 he cajoled Republican conservatives into creating the Bureau of Corporations with the power to investigate businesses engaged in interstate commerce but without regulatory powers. He also resurrected the nearly defunct Sherman Antitrust Act by bringing a successful suit to break up a huge railroad conglomerate, the Northern Securities Company. Roosevelt pursued this policy of "trust-busting" by initiating suits against 43 other major corporations during the next seven years. Also in 1902 Roosevelt intervened in the anthracite coal strike when it threatened to cut off heating fuel for homes, schools, and hospitals. This was the first time that a president had publicly intervened in a labour dispute at least implicitly on the side of workers. Roosevelt characterized his actions as striving toward a "Square Deal" between capital and labour. Roosevelt's boldest actions came in the area of natural resources. At his urging, Congress created the Forest Service (1905) to manage gover nment-owned forest reserves (Encyclopedia Britannica Online). William Howard Taft became President after Roosevelt. While agreeing with the overall policies of the Roosevelt administration, Taft felt that the power of the Presidency had been extended too far by the previous administration. Taft exerted his power to a much lesser degree. Often that was deemed by the progressive Roosevelt supporters as an abandonment of principles. Thus a major rift developed in the Republican Party. During his long government career, he served as Governor of the Philippines, Secretary of War, President of the United States and Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. He is the only man in U.S. history to have been both President and Chief Justice. Taft was committed to lowering tariffs, and when elected, he called Congress into a special session to this end. Congress succeeding in reducing the average tariff from 46 to 41 percent. However, special interest groups managed to raise the tariff on several items. Taft was an avid enforcer of the anti-trust policies of the Roosevelt administration. He repeatedly instituted the number of anti-trust suits brought against monopolist corporations. During his term of office, two of the biggest monopolies were broken - Standard Oil Company and the American Tobacco Company. Under Taft, the federal government for the first time began the regulation of the telephone and telegraph industries. The government also obtained the authority to fix interstate commerce rates. Taft maintained an activist approach to foreign policy. On one hand, he was the initiator of what became known as Dollar Diplomacy, in which the United States used its military might to promote American business interests abroad. Taft defended his Dollar Diplomacy as an extension of the Monroe Doctrine. Taft was a major supporter of arbitration as the most viable method of settling international disputes (History Central). The most visible legacy of Taft's Chief Justiceship is the Supreme Court Building, for which he lobbied. As Chief Justice, Taft's tenure was marked by hard work and by efforts for judicial reform. Taft was concerned about the delay and inefficiency in the federal court system. His first task was to secure the passage of The Judges Act in 1922. The act was the first major reform of the federal judiciary since 1789. It gave the Chief Justice more power over the
